Overview
Chapter 1

During this 3-month internship, I first spent some time expanding and understanding market expectations and the strengths and weaknesses of existing products through extensive research. After that, I identified potential solutions during brainstorming sessions with the team and met regularly to understand the alignment of everyone's ideas. And finally, after a two-month-long development process, we started to work on the final Design.

Kickoff
Chapter 2

During my 12-week internship at Wisers, I was assigned to the project of customizing the current CEM platform for clients in the large-size/durable goods markets. Upon joining the team, they were in the early stages of the product development process. Throughout the internship, I primarily assisted the team in gathering competitor audits, conducting user research, developing project concepts, and prototyping ideas.

Market Research
Chapter 3
What are the solutions that the market provides?

Due to the complexity of the Customer Experience Management (CEM) industry, I initially conducted a thorough survey of six competitors in the market to gain a deeper understanding of the CEM platform. Throughout the research process, my focus extended beyond the CEM platform to encompass big data consulting firms like Nielsen and McKinsey & Company.

How does the user experience vary across various platforms?

CEM platforms often demand the presentation of extensive data, underscoring the growing importance of interface accessibility. Consequently, I conducted a thorough exploration of these platforms, analyzing the merits and drawbacks of different designs with respect to user experience and hierarchical structure.

User Research
Chapter 4
What specific potential requirements do clients in the durable goods market possess?

After much research on the product structure and pages, I had a relatively sound and mature understanding of the CEM platform. Therefore, I started to research the target user group of this product improvement - the user research of the durable goods industry. In the user research, we targeted companies in the automotive industry. We contacted senior practitioners in the relevant industry with the research team. We tried to find breakthrough points from multiple perspectives, such as market pain points, ROI, and current solutions for users.

Research Diverge

Based on the research, I started to try to find the difference between the potential expectation points of users in the durable goods industry for the CEM platform and the traditional service industry. This step clarified my design goals. The main industry user differences are as follows.

In group communication

Users mostly have clearer team assignments and need very close in-group communication

Longer timeline

User research cases have a longer duration and need to be able to follow a data or project for a long time

Clearer comprtitors

The product categories are more clear and specific, so there are relatively clear target competitors

Brainstorm
Chapter 5
"Blue Sky" sessions

Building upon my prior research findings, I initiated a brainstorming session to conceptualize and formulate new features tailored to the specific traits of durable goods users. To enhance communication with my teammates and product managers, I provided detailed explanations for each idea, elucidating the rationale behind incorporating the feature and outlining its specifics.

Team Feedback

After meeting with the team, I found more design challenges and some issues that I hadn't considered in my brainstorm process. And later on these feedback significantly shaped the final output.

Enhanced collaboration

Enhancing the platform's collaboration features by designing a "Team Pinboard" to ensure that employees in a departmental team can share critical data and events

Optimized UI structure

To simplify the platform structure, I wanted to combine the functions of KOL research and competitor discovery into a "research center.”

Added a search section

Based on the research, users in the durable good markets need more sections for social media and competitor comparisons

Redesigned the home page

Improve the home page design to allow users have a better readability and prioritize data and events in the team group when they log in daily.

Final Design
Chapter 6
Redesigned Home page

The homepage allows users to quickly browse the data of the reports they are most interested in and to see the changes in the market during the off hours. In addition, given the diversity of users' backgrounds, the homepage can be configured to change the content according to the user's preferences.

New added Data center

The durable goods industry has a more defined set of competitors, so I redesigned the original comparison page to allow users to more easily compare side-by-side. And to view or search for specific competitor information from multiple perspectives.

Auto generated reports

users no longer need to download a large amount of data from for the purpose of weekly reporting. Users only need to select a pre-defined reporting template, and the platform will automatically generate the return slides based on the selected data. And to meet the user's habits in the durable goods market, I designed a "collaboration space" to allow multiple people to complete reports together.

Collaborative Team Calendar

Due to the team-based nature of users in the durable goods industry. In this feature, each user in a group can see what events and reports are being followed in their group, etc.

Reflections
Chapter 7
As a student

I applied the design and disruptive thinking knowledge I learned in school. I have also gained a complete understanding and experience of the daily tasks of a product designer

As a designer

I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of research in the design process and learned to navigate beyond the "ideal design" mindset, addressing real-world challenges such as development costs and user behaviors.

As a collaborator

I realized the importance of communication with colleagues and product managers during the meetings. And it allows me to express my ideas more efficiently and accurately in the future.
